Industries IoT is Impacting
Taking a problem and solving it with an IoT ecosystem seems like a simple proposition but there are challenges that can slow the progress of any deployment. Being aware of these issues prior to embarking on the journey to create your IoT ecosystem can alleviate potential problems.
The first problem is that there are currently no interoperability guidelines or open standards for IoT devices and hence many vendors are developing their own proprietary solutions – thus the need for integration as an ecosystem grows is critical. At the network layer however, the story is very different with the methods and protocols used for communications being well defined and based on industry ratified standards.
There are many challenges that need consideration when building out an IoT ecosystem, including:
- How to secure
- How to monitor and manage
- Understanding the right communications & signalling to use
- Understanding the bandwidth requirements
- Power consumption
- Data management

IoT at Work
Components of IoT
DATA PRESENTATION / AUTOMATION
At this layer, data is displayed as useful information in the form of a dashboard or the results from the analytics layer are used to trigger an event or process.
ANALYTICS / MACHINE LEARNING
This layer is where the smarts happen with the raw or unprocessed data run through analytics engines or algorithm to extract useful information.
Once the data is collected, it needs to be stored and secured – usually in the form of a database.
DATA COLLECTION POINTS
This is a layer where the data that has been collected. Collection points may be setup to be centralised or distributed – or a hybrid of both.
NETWORK / SECURITY
The physical network that the IoT devices connect to, usually in the form of a WiFi, Low Energy Bluetooth, or Zigbee solution. Security is usually applied across the network layer to ensure protection of data in transit.
This is the layer that relates to an actual data collector, usually in the form of a sensor, probe or agent running on a machine.
